- What we’re talking about: About 1,513 pounds of ready-to-eat guanciale were recalled because they may contain Listeria bacteria.
- Why this matters: Listeriosis can cause serious illness, especially in older adults, pregnant people, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.
- What you can do: Check your guanciale for the recalled lot number, and throw it away or return it if affected.
Check your refrigerators: Approximately 1,513 pounds of ready-to-eat pork products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and were recalled, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Sunday.1
The recalled pork products—ready-to-eat dry-cured pork jowl, or guanciale—were shipped to distributors, food service, and retail locations in eight states across the U.S., but there have been no confirmed illnesses associated with the products.

What You Should Do
The recalled pork products may still be in food service and retail refrigerators and freezers, so those businesses are being urged not to serve or sell the products. People may also have the recalled products in their home; if so, they should be thrown away or returned to where they were bought.
If you’ve eaten one of the recalled products, monitor yourself for symptoms of listeriosis, which can cause gastrointestinal symptoms as well as fever, muscle aches, and stiff neck. People at higher risk of serious illness who develop flu-like symptoms within two months of eating a contaminated product should contact a healthcare provider and mention the possible exposure.
Listeriosis can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant people and their newborns are also particularly vulnerable; an infection during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or a life-threatening infection in the newborn. The infection is treatable with antibiotics.
